As the culmination of our Talking Peace series, we conducted a speculative design workshop titled “Futuring Peace”, co-hosted by the Design Futures Initiative, where leaders from around the globe gathered to imagine a more equitable future.

In celebration of the United Nations’ 75th anniversary this year, the Innovation Cell of the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Design Futures Initiative (DFI) launched a call for designers and futurists to create speculative artifacts that evoke novel futures of how to better sustain peace. Under the theme “Futuring Peace”, groups were invited to create speculative pieces on conflict prevention, peace mediation, and peacebuilding, taking into account the complex, long term nature of reducing the risk of lapsing or relapsing into conflict using diplomatic action, regional and international partnerships, and supporting local peace initiatives. In this interactive event, guided by the framework of Speculative Design - a futures methodology using material culture to manifest multiple futures to facilitate a more desirable, responsible path - we invite community peacebuilders from Afghanistan, Bolivia, Iraq, and Rwanda through the network of Shared_Studios, the UN and Futures enthusiasts from around the world, to consider "How might we create a future of peacebuilding led by women and/or youth?"

The event began with an introduction to speculative design, then participants moved into breakout rooms to explore stories surrounding the “What if…” futures question, anchored in a light speculative design methodology to unpack the barriers and solutions to the multiple futures. Finally, the group reunited and shared insights on the discussions and ideas that emerged. As the final event of our Talking Peace series, we were inspired to build a brighter future that brings these speculative visions to life.
